This course defines “root cause analysis” and explores its purpose and value in improving patient safety. The identification of a “sentinel event,” relative to clinical setting, is described. The course further focuses on how to conduct a root cause analysis, and how findings can positively impact the patient’s plan of care. The benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to root cause analysis are discussed, particularly for patients with Alzheimer’s disease or a related neurocognitive disorder, and how such analyses benefit the healthcare organization.
